Church AI Policy for Small Churches
A simple, one-page starting point for churches with few staff and many volunteers
The short answer: a small church can use AI responsibly with one page that everyone understands.
Where most churches stand
In Barna's December 2025 survey of 442 U.S. Protestant pastors, 4% said their church has a formal AI policy, 17% offer informal guidance, and 79% have neither. Pastors were split on the right form: 45% favor a formal policy and 49% informal guidance only. Source: Barna, "Church AI Policies: Pastors Say They're Needed. Few Exist." For a small church, a short written guideline is a reasonable first step.
What a one-page policy should cover
- Who it covers: staff and the volunteers who handle church communications or data.
- What AI may help with: for example announcements, scheduling, editing, graphics, and research.
- What never goes into public AI tools: pastoral care details, giving records, information about children, health and prayer details. The Virginia Conference, UMC says pastoral confidences, congregational data, financial and health information, and personally identifiable information "must not be entered into public AI tools." - Human review: a person checks everything before it is shared. The World Council of Churches says a human must review all AI-generated content before publishing. Source: World Council of Churches, Use of AI in WCC Communications
- Disclosure: when and how you tell the congregation.
- Who to ask: name one point person, usually the pastor.
- Review: pick a date to revisit it. The Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference reviews its AI policies "at least annually." Source: Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference, UMC, AI Guidelines (May 2026)
Small-church shortcuts
- Use one shared church account for AI tools rather than personal accounts, so work stays with the church. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles requires work email addresses for AI tools used for church work. Source: Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Generative AI Use Policy (Admin Handbook Section 10.10)
- Start with the ways you already use AI. You don't have to list every possible tool.
- Have volunteers sign the acknowledgment line once a year.
